Mechanical Engineering taster session

Date: 23-Nov-2020

Time: 16:00- 17:00

Target year group: Year 13

Information: Mechanical Engineering: Sensing the world with sound.

In the pitch black, a bat speeds through the air and swoops around a tree to eat a tasty insect snack. Bats avoid trees and find snacks just by using sound. Scientists have taken this further and are using sound to detect flaws in the ancient UK sewage system! We are now designing a swarm of small robots that use sound to detect cracks and blocks in sewers.

In this talk, you will learn a physicist's approach to use sound, like a bat, to find things in the dark. Will you be able to recognise the sound of a blocked sewer?

Please note this is a repeat session of the events ran between April and June. You are welcome to attend again, however, please be aware the content of the session will be the same.

Benefits of attending this event: Our online taster sessions help Year 13 students experience what it is like to study at the University of Sheffield.

How to book a place: The following taster session is aimed at any Y13 pupils who have not yet submitted their UCAS form, and are therefore not holding any offers with the University of Sheffield. Any pupils who are offer holders and book onto a taster session will instead be invited to join us for our Virtual Applicant days from December - April.

To register your interest please click the event link and fill out the attached google form. https://www.sheffield.ac.uk/undergraduate/visit/taster-days/mechanical-engineering

In the event that there are more applications than there are available places, the Taster day team will assess all application forms and make decisions on the most suitable candidates based on predetermined scoring criteria.

Any steps required to confirm your attendance with the university running the event: To have your attendance at this event added to your RO record please email rosheffield@sheffield.ac.uk including the session you attended and the date it took place.
