Robert was an RO student in 2010/11. He studied A levels in History, Religious Education, Law and Sociology at Hemsworth Arts and Community College in Pontefract. He gained a place to study History BA (Hons) at King’s College, London in 2011. Hearing about graduate unemployment encouraged Robert to aim high when he made his university choices and his family where extremely encouraging in supporting him to achieve.

What Robert has to say about studying at a research intensive university

“The course is taught by world renowned academics who are experts in their field, which shows in their lectures. The excellent academic reputation and availability of resources were the deciding factors in my choice of university. The main benefits are the quality of teaching and being at the forefront of academic research. My course involves lectures and seminars in which we discuss topics in depth, and are accessed by essays and exams. A degree from an institution like this carries a lot of sway with potential employers. It helps build a successful CV. I do feel that it will improve my career prospects”

What Robert has to say about Realising Opportunities

“I found that the academic assignment really helped me to get a feel for academic writing and research in the field of history. I also found that e-mentoring was useful in giving me an opportunity to get information from someone who was already at university. My UCAS application was much stronger, but more importantly I feel I gained valuable skills that could be transferred into university.”

What next?

Robert achieved a first class degree from King’s, went on to postgraduate study at the University of Sheffield and is now a Regulatory Analyst on the KPMG graduate scheme.
