Hello everyone,

I hope you are all doing well. I am getting in touch as summer approaches, and most of you will be finishing off your first year exams. How did they go? Let me know if you want to chat about them.

This month I will be focusing on UCAS and personal statements, as it is a great time to start thinking about these before summer begins and you head into your final year.

UCAS
First things first I recommend having a browse of the UCAS website –you can check it out here. The UCAS application process is quite simple when you break it down into steps. You can browse through the courses offered by various universities and decide where and what you are applying for. You will then apply for a UCAS track account, which you may be able to get help with from a teacher or adviser at your school/college. Here, you will enter all your details and you can start applying to up to five different courses at universities, which increases your chance of receiving an offer. There will be more information on this in the future.

Personal statements
In regards to personal statements, you will also submit these via UCAS. In my experience, it is a very simple process and there is lots coming up as part of the RO programme which will help you with this so don’t stress! I know a few of you have already started thinking about your personal statements – which is great! You can start making notes of any ideas you have, and this will help you when you come to write it. There is a live Q&A coming up on Wednesday 17 July which is all about UCAS and personal statements. Check it out if you have questions about these things and would like to get answers from the RO Central Team and RO uni staff.

Early Applicant Support (EAS)
Just a reminder, as I know many of you have already emailed me, our EAS is an upcoming support opportunity that is available to you. For those applying to the earlier UCAS deadline of 15 October, we will we will be offering early applicant support, so those of you who have a personal statement written up and would like feedback on it – you can! If you haven’t let me know already and you’re thinking of applying to the earlier deadline and would like some support email me back with details of what support you’d be interested in , e.g. Oxbridge application, medicine, veterinary sciences or dentistry applications.
Online support will be provided from September by a group of students, who are studying different subjects at the RO Partner universities – so look out for more information about this soon!

RO Relaunch
After summer, the RO relaunch will begin! The RO Relaunch is a 4-day online programme (16-20 September) to get you back on board with the Realising Opportunities programme as you settle back in to school/college. It is a great opportunity to refresh your memory of the programme, and begin thinking about university choices with support of RO. This is just a reminder to save the date - you will get more information about the Relaunch soon!

Finally…
I hope you all have a wonderful summer, and a good break from revision and exams. I will be leaving the Realising Opportunities Central Team in mid –July, so I want to take the opportunity to wish you luck in your future exams. I will message again before I leave, but in the meantime do get in touch with any questions you might have. After I’ve left you’ll be able to get support from the RO Central Team (info@realisingopportunities.ac.uk) and you can also get in touch with your host university with any queries you have - use our key contacts page here.

If you have any questions about any of the information in this update, feel free to contact me (ro.ambassador@newcastle.ac.uk) and I will be able to help you.
