SUMMARY:Masterclass - What Is Anthropology\, and Can We Use It to Change the World? University of Birmingham
DESCRIPTION:University hosting: University of Birmingham \nLocation: University of Birmingham – Edgbaston Campus \nEvent Information:  Anthropology\, as a discipline dedicated to understanding human cultures and societies\, often engages with issues of social justice and inequality. What is the role of anthropologists in the face of exclusion and oppression? Should they just observe and describe\, or do they have a responsibility to help fight for change? Drawing from my own involvement in housing struggles and anti-eviction movements in Birmingham\, I’ll talk about how anthropology can help document but also challenge how local governments and big companies displace communities and contribute to new forms of urban precarity. A hands-on session will follow\, where we will explore how anthropology can engage with our communities and support ongoing campaigns and movements for change. \nThis event is suitable for: Year 12 and Year 13 \nHow to book a place: Please register on our website here. \nRecording your attendance on the RO student hub: Please email us at realisingopportunities@contacts.bham.ac.uk after the event so that your attendance can be logged on the RO database. Please include your full name\, the date\, time and title of the event. Uploading attendance to the RO student hub after the event is a manual process so can take some time – please do not worry about this.

SUMMARY:Masterclass - Practice Makes Perfect: Authors and Their Drafts\, University of Birmingham
DESCRIPTION:University hosting: University of Birmingham \nLocation: University of Birmingham – Edgbaston Campus \nEvent Information: How do you write a work of genius? Many people think authors sit down and write a masterpiece\, starting at the first page and ending at the last\, in one burst of inspiration. The truth is that most of the authors we know and love work hard revising and refining\, sometimes endlessly tweaking their work before they feel it is ready. And their manuscripts — handwritten drafts left for posterity–document this process. This workshop explores the writing process of some well-known authors\, using Oscar Wilde as our primary example. We’ll try to decipher his handwritten manuscripts to track his writing process\, and hopefully learn some tricks for refining our own writing.

SUMMARY:Quantum Computing: Hands On! - University of Leeds
DESCRIPTION:University hosting: University of Leeds \nLocation: University of Leeds campus\, Woodhouse Lane Leeds \nEvent Information: Quantum mechanics is the most accurate physical theory governing the behaviour of the Universe at tiny length scales. During the 20th century\, quantum mechanics allowed us to understand the atomic structure of matter and it led to vital practical applications such as high-precision clocks\, lasers and computers. In recent years\, it has been realised that we have only scratched the surface of quantum phenomena and major efforts are under way to harness the full power of quantum mechanics\, with the goal of creating “quantum technology” of unprecedented power. This session will present a modern introduction to quantum mechanics\, focusing on its practical applications such as learning how to programme a quantum computer recently developed by IBM. \nThis event is suitable for: Year 12 \nHow to book a place: Email rops@leeds.ac.uk and if space is available we will confirm a place via email. Students must be taking part in the RO scheme and will be able to claim travel expenses for public transport on the day. SUMMARY:Disrupting Dominant Narratives: Reading Blackness in Diasporic Life Writing - University of Leeds
DESCRIPTION:University hosting: University of Leeds \nLocation:  University of Leeds campus Woodhouse Lane Leeds \nEvent Information:  The Black Diaspora refers to the dispersal of people of African descent across the globe. Beginning in the late-nineteenth century\, Black people increasingly turned to life writing to (re)insert their experiences into national and international narratives. It does so by introducing a range of Black people’s life writing efforts from across the world during the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. You will have the chance to work with various primary sources including memoirs\, music\, and literature. In studying a range of sources from across the diaspora\, you will have the opportunity to not only immerse yourself in a fun and interactive session on Black history as written by Black people\, but also develop valuable skills such as analytical and critical thinking\, public speaking\, and persuasion. \nThis event is suitable for: Year 12 \nHow to book a place: Email rops@leeds.ac.uk and if space is available we will confirm a place via email.
