SUMMARY:Degrees of separation: Universities then\, now and tomorrow
DESCRIPTION:Location: The Gallery The Storey Meeting House Lane\, Lancaster\, LA1 1TH \nEvent Information: In this free public lecture\, Professor Joe Moran discusses the university as an ideal\, and as a real place. What should a university stand for\, who should be allowed to study there\, and what should a degree lead to? Does the university still have value as a physical space in an age of online learning? As part of the lecture\, Joe will draw on the experience of his parents as two of the first students at Lancaster University in 1964. They were first-generation students from working-class backgrounds with non-standard qualifications\, and Lancaster was the only university to accept them. How has the experience of being at university changed since they were students nearly sixty years ago? \n\nThis event is suitable for: Year 12 and 13. \nHow to book a place: Please register by clicking this link. \nRO Travel Scheme: Please contact Hamza Dalvi at realisingopportunities@lancaster.ac.uk for information on travel bursaries. \n\nRecording your attendance on the RO student hub: Please email the Lancaster University RO team at realisingopportunities@lancaster.ac.uk after the event to confirm your attendance. SUMMARY:Could Citizens’ Assemblies Improve Policymaking? (UCL Policy & Practice Seminar Series)
DESCRIPTION:Location: UCL Bloomsbury campus: Cruciform Building\, Gower Street\, London WC1E 6BT \nEvent Information: Citizens’ assemblies are increasingly proposed as ways of improving the functioning of democracy and policy-making. Yet their real-world record is mixed: while they almost always generate high-quality discussions internally\, their connection to wider political processes is often challenging\, meaning their impact can be limited. Careful consideration is therefore needed to what citizens’ assemblies are supposed to be for and how they can be embedded within political systems in order to achieve that. This seminar will explore these issues with two leading experts in deliberative democracy and Martin Wolf\, one of the UK’s most respected economic commentators\, whose recent book\, The Crisis of Democratic Capitalism\, argued that greater use of citizens’ assemblies is needed. \n\nThis event is suitable for: Year 13. \nHow to book a place: To book a place\, please click here. \nRO Travel Scheme: If you would like to access the RO Travel Scheme for support with your travel costs to attend this event\, please contact Ms Vathani Mariampillai at UCL via email: srs.realisingopportunities@ucl.ac.uk. SUMMARY:The Decline of Democracy and Advance of Autocracy (Policy & Practice Seminar Series)
DESCRIPTION:Location: UCL Bloomsbury campus: Cruciform Building\, Gower Street\, London\, WC1E 6BT \nEvent Information: In many parts of the world\, democratic values and institutions are being eroded\, while autocrats and ‘strongmen’ are gaining power in democratic countries\, and consolidating it in autocratic ones. Our expert panel will dissect the causes and consequences of these alarming trends\, examining case studies from multiple regions as well as cross-cutting themes such as the role of disinformation\, populism\, and polarisation. What can be done to protect against these forces? And what are the prospects for reversing the decline of democracy and the advance of autocracy? \n\nThis event is suitable for: Year 13. \nHow to book a place: To book a place\, please click here. \nRO Travel Scheme: If you would like to access the RO Travel Scheme for support with your travel costs to attend this event\, please contact Ms Vathani Mariampillai at UCL via email: srs.realisingopportunities@ucl.ac.uk. DESCRIPTION:Location: UCL Bloomsbury campus: 25 Gordon Street\, London\, WC1E \nEvent Information: Enforced disappearances have been employed as a tool by states throughout history.
