SUMMARY:Physics Virtual Talk: Exploding Stars and New-born Black Holes - when the Universe is your Lab - University of Leicester
DESCRIPTION:University hosting: University of Leicester \nLocation: Online \nEvent Information: Generally speaking\, blowing up a star in the lab is frowned upon because a) it would destroy the Earth and b) the star won’t fit in the lab in the first place. As an astrophysicist\, however\, our labs are the universe and no-one seems to object when it is the one blowing things up. An astrophysicist’s job is to study those explosions using advanced satellites to learn about the fundamental workings of the universe. In this talk\, you’ll be introduced to the most powerful explosions we know of gamma-ray bursts and understand why you wouldn’t exist without them. Along the way we’ll take in X-rays (and why Superman is a liar)\, new-born black holes\, gravitational waves and how we can learn so much about the universe from what is basically just a dot on the sky. \nThis event is suitable for: Year 12 and Year 13 \nHow to book a place: You can book your FREE place on this webpage. You will then be sent the link the day before the session or on the day. If you have any problems or questions emails us at progression@le.ac.uk. \nRecording your attendance on the RO student hub: Please email progression@le.ac.uk after the event so that your attendance can be logged on the RO database. Please include your full name\, the date\, time and title of the event. Uploading attendance to the RO student hub after the event is a manual process so can take some time – please do not worry about this.

SUMMARY:Engineering Virtual Talk: Why are Engineers Crucial for Modern Medicine?
DESCRIPTION:University hosting: University of Leicester \nLocation: Online \nEvent Information: The heart is the most critical organ in the human body\, and therefore the most widely studied and researched. There are many ways in which heart conditions can be monitored\, but none of them are so well developed as the Electrocardiogram (ECG). An ECG provides the most reliable picture of a heart condition\, and is indeed considered a gold standard\, as far as the monitoring and diagnosis of any abnormalities are concerned. However\, an ECG machine costs thousands of pounds\, making it inaccessible for continuous/long-term monitoring. In this session\, we will look at the design of a low-cost (sub 100) Arduino based device that can capture an ECG and how the results can be interpreted. This demonstrates the ideal example of interdisciplinary thinking needed from engineers to create innovative solutions for society. \nThis event is suitable for: Year 12;Year 13 \nHow to book a place: You can book your FREE place on this webpage (https://data.heat.ac.uk/event/apply/le/engineering-virtual-talk). You will then be sent the link the day before the session or on the day. If you have any problems or questions emails us at progression@le.ac.uk. \nRecording your attendance on the RO student hub: Please email progression@le.ac.uk after the event so that your attendance can be logged on the RO database. SUMMARY:Accounting and Finance Virtual Talk: To Borrow\, or not to Borrow - That is the Question
DESCRIPTION:University hosting: University of Leicester \nLocation: Online \nEvent Information: When firms want to expand and grow\, they may need bigger factories\, more inventory\, and more staff. Where do they get the additional cash from to fund this? Firms can borrow the money or get it from investors. The choice made here\, whether or not to borrow the needed funds\, can determine the success or failure of the expansion. This session will consider the possible sources of additional finance and show that there is almost always the same answer to the question. \nThis event is suitable for: Year 12;Year 13 \nHow to book a place: You can book your FREE place on this webpage (https://data.heat.ac.uk/event/apply/le/accounting-and-finance-virtual-talk).
