Yet their real-world record is mixed: while they almost always generate high-quality discussions internally\, their connection to wider political processes is often challenging\, meaning their impact can be limited. Careful consideration is therefore needed to what citizens’ assemblies are supposed to be for and how they can be embedded within political systems in order to achieve that. DESCRIPTION:Location: UCL Bloomsbury campus: Bentham House\, London\, WC1E 0EG \nEvent Information: Corruption is a major societal challenge in governments around the world\, undermining economic growth\, trust in government and the delivery of basic services to citizens\, from stolen medicines in clinics to crumbling roads. According to Transparency International’s 2022 Corruption Perceptions Index\, corruption perceptions are not improving. On the contrary\, most countries are failing to stop corruption: 155 countries have made no significant progress against corruption or have declined since 2012. The UK is no exception\, with scandals surrounding government procurement contracts during the COVID-19 pandemic and alleged abuses of the honours and peerages system. What can be done to tackle corruption in government? And what role\, in particular\, can transparency play? DESCRIPTION:Location: Online \nEvent Information: What does it really mean to work in the health and social care industry for Black women? Despite a growing awareness for diversity and inclusivity in workplaces\, research consistently shows that Black women in health and social care regularly face intersectional discrimination due to their race and sex. We’ve invited a panel of Black women from health and social care sectors to discuss their experiences in the industry for this Black History Month’s focus on ‘Celebrating our sisters’. We will discuss what lessons they have learnt during their careers to inform Black girls and women with hopes of entering health and social care on the potential barriers they could face.
