My Experience at an RIU
RO Ambassador, Imogen, shares her experience of studying at an RIU!
What course do I study and where?
I am studying the BSc in Psychology with Professional Placement at Newcastle University. I am currently in my 4th and final year!
Why do I love studying at an RIU?
I love getting to be part of research that can make a difference to people’s lives! Student experiences will differ between RIUs, but I have had excellent opportunities! What I should mention is when I first started the degree, I was not interested in research (only clinical psychology) but after these experiences, I am positive that I want a career that has research in it too.
How as my placement year helped me?
I had the opportunity to work for a clinical research team full-time on placement. I was supported by many academics and clinicians who nurtured my learning (whether that was on research projects or supervising my clinical role) and pushed me to apply for opportunities. Placement has massively shaped my future career plans and I continue to work with them on my final year research project using their excellent facilities.
How have I benefited from research internships?
In the summer of 2025, I applied to do a paid research internship through Newcastle University. I had 4 fabulous weeks doing research about informal carer wellbeing. I worked within a team of academics and other interns, attended conferences and presented my work at a public engagement event. The project is also in the process of being submitted for publication. This experience enormously helped me to pursue research without financial barriers and will hopefully help a lot of people.
I was also fortunate enough to do a paid research internship with the University of Exeter through a national scheme. Even though this wasn’t through my university, I believe that what helped me to get this internship was the fact I was already studying at an RIU. This experience was so valuable to me both personally and professionally, and I made some amazing memories with the team I worked with.
What financial help have I received to pursue research?
Research-intensive universities are very encouraging about disseminating your research (sharing your work). During placement I was accepted to present a scientific poster at a conference in London. Fortunately, I managed to get my trains and tubes paid for through the university conference bursary.
I also had financial help for relocating to Exeter when I completed my research internship (even though this was not at Newcastle!) because they were keen for me to get involved in professional development that would help me in my future career.
In addition, when I was on placement, I was awarded a Widening Participation Bursary to help me with the financial costs!
