Event Information: The heart is the most critical organ in the human body, and therefore the most widely studied and researched. There are many ways in which heart conditions can be monitored, but none of them are so well developed as the Electrocardiogram (ECG). An ECG provides the most reliable picture of a heart condition, and is indeed considered a gold standard, as far as the monitoring and diagnosis of any abnormalities are concerned. However, an ECG machine costs thousands of pounds, making it inaccessible for continuous/long-term monitoring. In this session, we will look at the design of a low-cost (sub 100) Arduino based device that can capture an ECG and how the results can be interpreted. This demonstrates the ideal example of interdisciplinary thinking needed from engineers to create innovative solutions for society.
