Geology and the green transition
Location: University of Leeds, Woodhouse Lane, LS2 9JT
Event Information: Do you ever wonder what lies inside your smartphone? An iPhone contains over 30 elements, including some that you might be less familiar with, such as Indium and Gallium. All inorganic materials are sourced from the ground beneath us, and it requires a strong understanding of geology to find them. This session will explore what geology is and its importance in society, namely in the green transition. You will handle some rock samples containing the essential metals and gain an appreciation for how they occur in the natural environment. The study of geology involves the use and application of principles from chemistry, physics, biology, maths and geography. If you enjoy any of these subjects and are curious about the natural world around you, choose this session to explore the world of geology and the careers it can lead to.
