Event Information: Quantum mechanics is the most accurate physical theory governing the behaviour of the Universe at tiny length scales. During the 20th century, quantum mechanics allowed us to understand the atomic structure of matter and it led to vital practical applications such as high-precision clocks, lasers and computers. In recent years, it has been realised that we have only scratched the surface of quantum phenomena and major efforts are under way to harness the full power of quantum mechanics, with the goal of creating “quantum technology” of unprecedented power. This session will present a modern introduction to quantum mechanics, focusing on its practical applications such as learning how to programme a quantum computer recently developed by IBM. Suitable for: Students with general knowledge of maths and physics.
