Introducing Your RO Ambassador – Lipika

Say hello to Lipika, a current uni student at Newcastle University

Hi! I’m Lipika, a first year Education student at Newcastle University and I am your Realising Opportunities Ambassador for this year. Before going to university, I studied Maths, Music, Philosophy A-levels (unique combination I know!) and completed an Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), which went into issues around testing in the education system. During sixth form, I wasn’t too sure what I wanted to do but was interested in issues within education and my EPQ allowed me to explore this interest further. I considered courses within humanities and social sciences, including philosophy, politics, sociology and languages but I ultimately decided on education studies as I wanted to delve into this particular interest further. It’s quite a niche degree so most people haven’t heard of it before, but it essentially explores the meaning and place of education in the world today.

Outside of my studies, I enjoy writing lyrics, reading thriller books, colouring and cooking. If I could travel back in time to my first year of sixth form, I would tell my 16/17-year-old self (plus maybe friends around me) to try and not beat yourself up or get anxious if you have no idea what career you’d like to pursue at the moment. Be proactive, seek out and take on different opportunities and perhaps spend some time researching and talking to teachers, friends or family about what topics in the world spark your enthusiasm and interest. Eventually, everything falls into place but just try your best to understand what path may be best for you. I’m looking forward to working with you and answering any questions that you might have while you go through this stage of your life.

Anybody who is in their first year of the RO programme can email me – my email address will be at the bottom of every monthly update email that you will receive. I am always open to talking about your plans for this year or even the longer term!
